PSY-554 Comparative Psychotherapy (W22)
Psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, and family systems theories will be explored as exemplars of the bio-psycho-social systems metatheory inherent in seminal approaches such as Alfred Adler’s. Specific applications drawn from current psychotherapy modalities will allow students new to psychotherapy to explore the theoretical and applied landscape of psychotherapy practice and will encourage those already familiar with the field to compare and share experiences. Alfred Adler’s emphasis on the uniqueness of each individual will be related to the suggestion that psychotherapy integration rightly occurs at the point of determining which of many available psychotherapy modalities is needed by this client in this situation at this point in time. This course is intended to provide a base for students to further their familiarity with specific psychotherapy modalities and to develop the metatheoretical concepts that underlie effective treatment choices.
